Feather Talk: What is Molt and Why it Matters

I recently mentioned during a program that our birds are just getting back to work after being off for molt.


The person I was talking to didn’t quite understand what I meant. And honestly, it made me smile—because it’s easy to forget that not everyone pays quite as much attention to the biological functions of birds as we bird nerds do!


So, what exactly does it mean when we say a bird is “off for molt,” and why does it matter?


Feathers don’t last forever.


Feathers are remarkable structures. Of course they help birds fly, but they also provide insulation, protect their skin, and, in some species, play a role in communication and courtship.


But they don’t last forever. Sunlight, weather, and everyday wear gradually take their toll. And unlike our hair, a fully grown feather can’t repair itself at the root. Birds have to replace it.


This process is called molting.


Wild birds generally molt gradually, replacing a few feathers at a time so they can continue flying, finding food, and avoiding predators.


Our captive birds often experience a heavier molt than their wild counterparts. With great nutrition, routine healthcare, and protection from many of the challenges of life in the wild, they can drop and replace more feathers at once.


And growing feathers takes a tremendous amount of energy. New feathers don’t start out as the lightweight structures we’re familiar with. As they grow, they are living tissue supplied by blood vessels. These developing feather shafts are full of blood and thus are referred to as blood feathers.


They’re delicate, and damaging one can cause significant bleeding. They can also show the effects of stress during development. If a bird experiences significant nutritional or physical stress while a feather is growing, it can leave a visible line or weakness across the feather called a stress bar. In severe cases, these weakened areas can cause the feather to break.


That’s one reason we’re especially careful about transporting or working our birds heavily during molt. Their bodies are busy growing a brand-new set of feathers so we give them a break.


Once the new feathers are fully grown in and they’re feeling strong again, they can gradually return to programs.

Look carefully at those delicate fringed edges and the soft, velvety texture. These adaptations help an owl break up airflow and absorb sound, allowing it to fly almost completely silently.


Something as simple as a feather is an incredible piece of natural engineering! And a feather is so much more than a flat surface. Each vane is built from tiny structures called barbs and barbules, with microscopic hooks that catch onto one another like little zippers, holding the feather together. When a bird preens, it’s essentially zipping those tiny hooks back together, restoring the feather’s structure.


Found a feather?


Here’s something many people don’t know: you can’t legally keep a feather from a native bird of prey.


Birds of prey are protected by law, and those protections extend to their feathers, nests, and eggs. It may seem harmless to pick up a feather you find on the ground, but there’s no way to know whether it was naturally shed or taken from a living bird. That’s why the law protects the feather, too.


So if you find a beautiful hawk or owl feather, resist the urge to take it home. Take a good look. Investigate it. Then leave it where you found it.


That feather still has a job to do. Birds and small mammals use feathers to line nests, dens, and burrows. In nature, very little is wasted. A feather may have finished one job, but it can still serve another.


And that’s one of the things I love most about paying attention to the natural world. There is always more happening than we realize. Beneath the familiar rhythms of the seasons, countless natural processes are quietly unfolding all around us.


A simple molted feather is just one small reminder that nature is always changing, renewing, and beginning again.
